Cajal's Scientific Drawings and Plein Air Landscapes

Cajal's scientific drawings are a testament to his observational skills and his ability to translate what he saw into a visual language that could be understood by others. I am struck by the beauty of his drawings and the level of detail he was able to capture. By painting landscapes from his birthplace and juxtaposing them with neuron imagery, I am trying to create a visual representation of the environment that inspired his scientific work. DAWN HUNTER ART™ | FACETOBER 2022

PERFECTION IS ACHIEVED NOT WHEN THERE IS NOTHING MORE
TO ADD, BUT WHEN THERE IS NOTHING LEFT TO TAKE AWAY.

October 24, 2022.

This year for Facetober, I continued to focus on the sub-theme of my daughter, Darcy. I also wanted to experiment with portraiture and use color and pattern to create mood and atmosphere. I aimed to create a feeling of warmth and intimacy in my images, and I wanted to capture Darcy’s essence within the various daily themes. My favorite image from this series is the image of Darcy with blue braids and gold hoop earrings. I love how she wryly smiled for the pose, and the spark in her eye alludes to a sense of mystery. It is also one of Darcy’s favorite portraits from this year’s challenge. She feels that it communicates a sense of sophistication and glamour. I am delighted with how expressive and evocative my Facetober series turned out. I am also pleased and touched by Darcy’s ongoing collaboration thus, the portraits also serve as a diary of our relationship. We always have a lot of fun, and I learn from her.

This drawing is not from this year's Facetober. I am sharing it here because I thought that it serves as a nice transition from portraits of Darcy to drawings about Cajal.

This year I participated in the SciArtSeptember social media prompts for the second time and I have found it to be a very rewarding experience. I enjoy interacting with the other artists who are participating and seeing their work, but I also love responding to the prompts with my artwork about the topics. This event has given me a great opportunity to connect with other artists and learn from them, which has been really valuable to me. SciArtSeptember was created by and is hosted annually by Liz Butler (@liz_lagomorph) and Glendon Mellow (@FlyingTrilobite.)

I have applied a slight filter to each image to darken it, effectively juxtaposing the text with the image indexing. To see the images without the filter, click on the image icons below to launch a slide show. To know the brain...is equivalent to ascertaining the material course of thought and will, to discovering the intimate history of life in its perpetual duel with external forces.
